Beutler named 2009 MBU Distinguished Professor

Known for an infectious fervor for a subject matter he has devoted much of his life to studying, Dr. Keith Beutler, an associate professor of history, has been named the 2009 Missouri Baptist University Distinguished Professor.

“Dr. Keith Beutler’s passion for teaching students about history transcends the instruction that occurs inside his classes,” said Arlen Dykstra, MBU provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Dr. Beutler is committed to enriching his students’ lives through a subject matter he loves. He is an exceptional teacher, scholar and leader.”


The award is announced annually at MBU’s commencement exercise. The honor was created in 2003 in continuation of the long-standing Parkway Distinguished Professor Award. The award includes a $1,000 stipend.

The MBU Distinguished Professor Award is designed to recognize an exemplary professor who demonstrates outstanding teaching ability, dedication and enthusiasm. Effective teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, effective  advising service to MBU’s community and commitment to high standards of excellence were criteria used by the University to select this year’s recipient.


Dr. Beutler has taught at MBU since 2004. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Washington University, master’s degrees from Union University and The University of Tennessee and a bachelor’s degree from Liberty University. He has presented a vast amount of research at a multitude of academic conferences worldwide and has received research fellowships from a a host of prominent historical organizations—from The New York Historical Society to the Library Company of Philadelphia.
